Shagreened Slug Moth
Apoda biguttata
July 8, 2011

Check out this moth's imitation of a Wooly Mammoth!

Shagreen (and I had to look this up) is a kind of leather made from untanned horse or shark hide. It has  granular pale markings on a light tan surface.

A. biguttata is a Slug Caterpillar Moth, or Limacodid. There's a variety of them coming out all at once this season! I have a slide of the larva, which, like most of the limacodids, are the true expression of the moth. I will try and remember to scan  it to add to this page.
