Yellow-collared Scape Moth
Cisseps fulvicollis
September 18, 2002
I always wondered what was meant
by "scape" moth. I looked up the word
and found that the scape is the long
basal joint of the antenn[ae] of an insect.
So, I assume that this is what the moth's
common name is meant to draw one's
attention to.
Once you get past the orange collar, that is. Yes, orange - I've never seen one with a yellow collar.
C. fulvicollis is a fairly common day flying arctiid in my area. It is a wasp, or possibly beetle, mimic.
