Oval-based Prominent
Peridea basitriens
June 7, 2007
Here's another one of those "tree huggers"... Many of the prominents (notodontidae) are very cryptic in the way they rest. Not so much in color, although, there's no question most are colored to blend in, but in how their wings are held. This particular species forgoes the rolled wing "twig" disguise (see Red-washed Prominent) and instead employs the "create a low profile" defense.
The football-shaped (oval) markings at the base of the forewings make this species easy to identify.
