Olive Angle Shades
Phlogophora iris
June 8, 2010

A very fresh and colorful individual came to the light last night.  The Angle Shades have that distinct crimping or rolling on the leading edge of the forewings, ending in a sharp point.  The "angle" in angle shades refers to the angular pattern in the middle of the wings.  I wonder if "shades" references their ability to remain camouflaged in the leafy shade of trees.  There is actually a patent for camouflage material that uses the pattern and shading of this species' wings.
