Maple Spanworm Moth

This moth appears on the scene at a time when the maple leaves are turning yellow, and are growing tattered and blotchy.

Ennomos magnaria blends in just beautifully.  

While their stocky bodies may cause them to resemble owlets, they are actually geometrids.
