Figure-seven Moth
Drasteria grandirena
July 14, 2004
This is a moth I find on the
wing day and night. According to Covell's "Eastern Moths", the larvae feed on witchhazel, of which there is plenty in my yard.
The "7" is formed by the median band and the reniform spot on the forewing. To my eye, it's not as obvious as the "8" on the Figure Eight Sallow. In some areas, the common name is "Great Kidney", which refers to the large reniform spot.
