Clymene Moth
Haploa clymene
August 1, 2002
Clymene (daughter of Oceanus and Tethys) was the mother of Atlas, Menoetius, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Phaethon, Atlanta, a number of girls known as the Heliades, and others.
While these Greek heroes shared
the same mother, there were about
three or four fathers in the mix.
I suppose something about this moth made the namer (Brown) think of her back in 1776.
I sometimes find Clymene's arctiid namesake
about during the day, resting on a broad leaf in
the shade.
Note the uniform orange color beneath the moth.
